So…the draft started yesterday. Yes, it did, and I watched it. And there are basically three things to report:
1. The Saints had no pick in the first round.
2. A lot of trades went down.
3. So what?
This draft would be a difficult one to get up for, even without all the bounty shit. Being a Saints fan this offseason feels a lot like being an orphan standing outside in the snow, gazing through frosted windows at the warm, snug life inside, while shivering and weeping frozen tears…
…and plotting revenge. You’ll get yours, effete bourgeois pigs. When we hoist the Lombardi, it will be your turn to mourn.
In actual news, Lee Zurik of Fox8 (who remembers when 8 used to be ABC? Who remembers when it was PBS? Raise your hands…) has outed one Tim Landry as the informer behind the ESPN eavesdropping story. Apparently, Landry was employed by the Saints as a sound and electrical contractor until he wasn’t, and he left all his gruntlement behind when he was shown the door. Which is about the scenario that everyone figured on.
Ex-WWLer Kenny Wilkerson told Zurik that ESPN reporteroid John Barr contacted him earlier this year, trying to dig up any available dirt on the Saints, and Wilkerson (who apparently has little gruntlement himself) provided Barr with the phone numbers of several potential
rats sources. One of those belonged to Landry.
That doesn’t mean that Landry is the rat. It doesn’t even mean that Landry (or whoever the rat is) is lying. Personally, I don’t put much credence in Barr’s story, for a number of reasons; but just because I don’t believe Barr doesn’t mean I do believe Zurik. I certainly hope that Landry is the guilty party—because I would hate to see what’s going to happen to him happen to an innocent man. But whatever winds up shaking out at the end of this sorry episode, I hope it serves as an object lesson in the way modern journalism leaves a trail of wreckage to mark its progress. But, probably not.
